"We have very low expectations, and we don't expect any results." Print E-mail

Now there's a disheartening statement if there ever was one, and it totally got my attention.  What is this all about?  Who said this, and why?  You might guess it's about the Presidential campaign, and who could blame you?  If you think about it, is there any issue that is immune from this sentiment?  But here, you know it has something to do with space.

Before I tell you who said this and in what context, consider how widespread this problem is within the entire (NewSpace and OldSpace) space community.  For example:

Some in the NewSpace community feel this way about NASA
Some in NASA feel this way about the NewSpace community
Some in the OldSpace community feel this way about the NewSpace community
Some in the NewSpace community feel this way about the OldSpace community
Some in Congress feel this way about NASA
Some in Congress feel this way about NewSpace
Some in Congress feel this way about OldSpace
Many Americans feel this way about Congress, but that's another story
Some in the European Space Agency feel this way about NASA
Some in NASA feel this way about the European Space Agency

You get the picture, and this could go on and on (both the list and the duration).  A rather sad state of affairs, and there is only one way around this.  It requires something that is very difficult for most human beings; setting aside ego and self-interest.  It requires open-minded dialogue (not debate) with a willingness to acknowledge what isn't working, even at one's own expense.  In other words, it requires courageous leadership.

We have very low expectations, and we don't expect any results" was spoken by Jin Ju, the minister-counselor for science and technology at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC (as reported on p. 21 of the March 3, 2008 issue of Aviation Week and Space Technology).
