An Eighth Century Buddhist Reference To Space Print E-mail

One of the tragedies of the ever-present debate about whether public monies should be spent on space exploration is the notion that human activity in space is somehow disconnected from our lives on Earth.  If you've heard my speeches or read my articles and Op-Ed's, you know how strongly I stand against this.  Most of the time I refer to the very practical issues of resources, energy, and environment, but there is more to human existence.

The eighth-century Buddhist saint Shantideva understood our very human connection with space.

May I be a protector to those without protection,
A leader for those who journey,
And a boat, a bridge, a passage
For those desiring the further shore.

May the pain of every living creature
Be completely cleared away.
May I be the doctor and the medicine
And may I be the nurse
For all sick beings in the world
Until everyone is healed.

Just like space
And the great elements such as earth,
May I always support the life
Of all the boundless creatures.

And until they pass away from pain
May I also be the source of life
For all the realms of varied beings
That reach unto the ends of space.

There is a reason that some of us are compelled to reach for the stars.
