Did You Hear "Space" In The State Of The Union Talk? Print E-mail

Space was there.  It was everywhere.  What?  You didn't hear it?  Oh, if you were listening for the actual word, well... you're right, it wasn't there.  But if you only hear "space" when the actual word is used, then you're listening with traditional OldSpace ears and you're missing what human space activity is becoming and how it must evolve beyond its 1950's roots.

Of course President Bush didn't specifically mention space or NASA.  With all the current concerns of his Administration and the American people, you're fooling yourself if you think even one of his speechwriters suggested he give 6.2 seconds to space.  What about the Vision for Space Exploration he announced with great fanfare in January 2004?  Sorry, but budget pressures and insufficient public support have hit that fan and the VSE is well along the slow and torturous road to oblivion.

What did the President talk about?  Job growth and sustainable economic development.  American competitiveness in a global marketplace.  The environment.  Clean energy.  The importance of scientists and engineers was mentioned several times, along with education.  Our activity in space is already or must be connected with every one of these issues in the minds of the media, the public, business and economic development leaders, and politicians at every level of government.  When this happens, then you'll not only hear "space" mentioned in every State of the Union talk, you'll hear and read the word everywhere, for space will be so intertwined with commercial activity and our lives in many more visible ways than it is today.  The economy will truly be a space economy.  It is not NASA's job to make this happen, nor does it have the ability to do so.  It is the job of all space advocates.
