On March 10th, NASA announced that it "completed a successful test firing of the igniter that will be used to start the Ares I rocket first stage motor." The day before, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) announced that it had "successfully conducted a full mission duration firing of its new Merlin Vacuum engine on March 7." Mankind's first space race was between nations and politico-economic idealogies, and the loser (the Soviet Union) has broken-up into more pieces than two colliding satellites. Today, in the U.S., we have an entirely different space race; the private sector (NewSpace) vs. the Federal Government. In other words, a battle between space capitalism and command economy space programs. If we do this right, each will settle into its most efficient and effective niches during the next three-five years, with each relying on the other's strengths and doing what the other cannot accomplish. If we do this wrong, we will waste more tax dollars as NASA continues to compete with the private sector. Gentlemen, start your space engines! |
