Spaceport America Executive Director Steve Landeene spoke to about 120 citizens at yesterday's Spaceport town hall meeting at the Hot Springs High School gym in Truth or Consequences, NM. Ironically, this city has the perfect name for the debate swirling around the issue of adding a .25% sales tax to Sierra County purchases to help build the $198 million commercial spaceport. In any debate involving taxes and politics, can the truth survive? If the vote fails and the spaceport isn't built, what are the consequences for NewSpace? |

With Google Alerts, you can be notified when your name appears online. That's a great tool, but haven't you sometimes wondered when others are thinking and talking about you... and what they're thinking and saying? Google is working on that very problem with their Google MIND (Monitoring Individual Neurons and Discussions) Project. "In about two years, we'll launch the first of twenty-six geosynchronous MIND satellites," says project manager Harlan "Ellison" Jellison. Congratulations to XCOR Aerospace CEO Jeff Greason and all XCOR employees on today's announcement of the Lynx Mk. 1 (yes, there will be more models) single-stage suborbital spacecraft. No doubt much of the well-deserved attention will focus on the engineering differences between this vehicle and those of Rocketplane and Virgin Galactic. While the distinctions are certainly important, the business implications resulting from these design differences point to the true value of NewSpace. |
