The Google Lunar X PRIZE is a $30 million international competition to safely land a robot on the Moon, travel 500 meters, and transmit images and data back to Earth. Unlike previous decades where space activity was largely government-funded, companies and organizations are responding to challenges like this and demonstrating that space exploration is no longer limited to multi-billion dollar programs. Other than the prestige of winning and the respect earned even if you place second (after all, it is a tremendous accomplishment), what other value can be gained from competing for this prize? As part of a committee evaluating the creation of a university-led team to compete for the prize, I've had some valuable insights. |

Now there's a disheartening statement if there ever was one, and it totally got my attention. What is this all about? Who said this, and why? You might guess it's about the Presidential campaign, and who could blame you? If you think about it, is there any issue that is immune from this sentiment? But here, you know it has something to do with space. |

Green, green, green; you just can't escape it. The environmental movement has finally leaped that last hurdle from fringe movement to mainstream public issue. How can you tell? Businesses of every shape and size are stepping all over themselves to demonstrate their environmental consciousness, and this is only happening because of consumer demand... which reflects consumer concerns. Will NewSpace survive? |
