NASA just distributed a press release entitled, "NASA'S ARES I ROCKET PASSES REVIEW TO REACH CRITICAL MILESTONE." One sentence makes it quite clear that NASA is still competing with the NewSapce industry, especially companies like Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) that is building the Falcon rockets and Dragon capsule to do the same thing as the Ares and Orion for space station missions. Here is that sentence: "Starting in 2015, the Ares I rocket will launch the Orion crew exploration vehicle, its crew of four to six astronauts, and small cargo payloads to the International Space Station." How should SpaceX respond, especially when considering that part of its Falcon development costs are being paid by NASA under its Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program? How should the Personal Spaceflight Federation respond, of which SpaceX is a member? |

Last week I participated in the "DC-X/XA Reunion and Space Transportation for the 21st Century" conference in Alamogordo, hosted by the New Mexico Museum of Space History. I was fortunate to attend the second DC-X launch in Sept. 1993 and wrote about that experience here. NASA Administrator Mike Griffin was a luncheon keynote speaker (click here for his speech), and during his speech and subsequent Q&A he talked about fairness. |

The title of the article on MSNBC.com was direct: "Strike three for SpaceX's Falcon 1 rocket." The perfect American phrase for a third failure, and with the "strike three and your out" connotation it gives ammunition to those who believe NewSpace companies like SpaceX cannot succeed. Be assured that those who dismiss NewSpace will anoint this failure with deep majesty and solemn sorrow... and wave it from the highest mountain of self-righteousness; "See, I told you only governments and big space firms can do this." A little perspective is needed. |
